My Makeup Essentials

Happy Sunday youthfuls!

This weeks post is a little different to our usual style updates – introducing the category “Beauty” to the blog. Now, I am by no means a professional make up artist or a master of the art, all I do have to my name are years of applying stage make up for performances (and watching YouTube videos). I am however, a girl who loves practicing her winged liner and swatching everything from eyeshadows to lipsticks. It is therefore safe to say I’ve tried and tested many products over the years, and so, after many requests from you guys for a post like this, I decided to share my make up ‘holy grails’ with you.

At your Prime

My number one primer has to be Porefessional by Benefit Cosmetics. Light weight, matte and long lasting, it provides a flawless base for makeup and really helps my T-zone from getting a little too shiny!

All About That Base

I love a foundation that feels and looks as natural as my skin. After trying and testing many products (as one has to do with foundation), I’ve found the two that worked best for me were: Double Wear by Estee Lauder and the Studio Fix Fluid by Mac. The great thing about these liquid foundations is that they both have an SPF (yay for skin cells) and that they both have great coverage so you don’t need to apply a lot of it! What I have found myself doing however, is wearing the Double Wear during the day and my Studio Fix Fluid at night. The Double Wear really doesn’t do well with a camera flash, so if you’re always on the lookout great photo ops like me, take advantage of this matte foundation during the day rather than look like a ghost in your pictures at night! 😉

To set my foundation I swear by the Mac Studio Fix Powder or this affordable and long lasting Yardley Stayfast Pressed Powder. I use the shade translucent because I feel it really gives me a natural-looks-like-your-skin finish.

Contour & Highlight

As you’ve gathered by now, I like my make up to look as natural as possible, which is why I love using powdered products for my contour and highlight instead of cream based products. I find powdered products much easier to work with and not as heavy on the skin. The aim of the game is to end up with what I like to call a ‘soft chisel’.

Smashbox Contour Palette – Comes with contour, bronze & highlight shades as well as a little guide on where to use each shade. It also comes with a contour brush – score!

Mary-Lou Manizer by The Balm Cosmetics – A natural yet pigmented highlighter – my absolute favourite!

Brush – Cala Fan Brush in 305.

PS, my favourite blush has to be from the Yardley Stayfast Blush range. I didn’t attach pictures of mine because of the sheer states they are in – but thats just proof I love to use them!

 Eye Spy

When I do my make up I spend most of my time on my eyes (not just because it takes me a while to get the perfect winged liner!), but because the eyes are the first thing you connect to when you see a person, they tell a story. How you choose to adorn them will allow meaning and character to unfold in your looks.

Brows – Goof Proof Brow Pencil & Gimme Brow to set my brows in place, both by Benefit Cosmetics.

Eye Liners – Lakme Insta Liquid Liner & Woolworths Gel Liner

Eye Shadows – Huda Beauty Rose Gold Eyeshadow Palette. I purchased this one from LaBoutique and I absolutely love it! The looks you can create are endless and they are so easy to blend.

Mascara – Loreal False Wings Sculpt and Revlon Ultimate All-In-One. I could choose to wear these mascaras with no other makeup and be 100% good to go! They both add volume and length to my lashes keeping my eyes bright and lifted all day long. The False Wings Sculpt is also great for tightlining your upper waterline and the Ultimate-All-In-One has a great wand for your little lower lashes as well.

Finally, we come to the real good stuff. Now lipsticks are something we’ve all been mastering since we were 4 and first discovered our mums make up bag, but as we’ve gotten older our choices and skills have become a lot more refined. If I wrote about every brand, type and colour of lipstick I loved this post would never end. What I can share is that I’m not a one shade kind of girl. I love experimenting with colours and sometimes mixing two to three different shades together. I’d wear anything from a soft lilac to a vixen red bordering on black, but my heart lies with nude shades.

NYX Cosmetics – Soft Matte Lip Cream – I can’t get enough!

Mac – Any colour and every type – they’re my biggest weakness! (PS A special mention has to go out to Whirl-my number one colour and definite go to!)

I really hope you guys enjoyed this post. It felt good to do something different and to chat about what I’ve been loving. What good is having knowledge if we don’t share it? I’ve got your back gurl 😉
